Push-to-talk button vs keyboard shortcut vs voice activation

Use a keyboard shortcut at a desk, a push-to-talk control when you need a deliberate start and stop, and voice activation only when its convenience outweighs its social and privacy trade-offs.

Choose a keyboard shortcut for a fixed desk workflow.

A keyboard shortcut is usually the fastest route when your hands are already on the keyboard and the cursor is in the right app. Apple lets you start Dictation with a configurable shortcut, and it documents a Microphone key and Edit > Start Dictation as other entry points.

Choose this route when you want no extra device and can remember the gesture without stopping your train of thought. It is less useful when you are walking, standing away from the computer, or repeatedly moving between physical tasks.

Choose push-to-talk when clear intent matters more than zero friction.

A push-to-talk control makes the beginning and end of a voice input explicit. That can work well when you want a physical moment of intention, share space with other people, or do not want a system waiting for a wake phrase.

Relay for macOS currently captures audio only while the assigned recording key is held. That is a software interaction on an M-series Mac. It does not depend on Relay Q, and it should not be described as if future hardware were already in use.

Choose voice activation when hands-free access is worth the trade-off.

Voice activation can be useful when your hands are occupied or a device is not easy to reach. Meta says its AI glasses can be activated with “Hey Meta” or by tapping and holding the touchpad, and frames that input around hands-free questions, messages, and reminders.

The trade-off is that speaking a wake phrase can be awkward in public, interrupt other people, or be poorly suited to sensitive material. Test the social setting as much as the feature list.

A foot pedal can be worth considering only after the software path is clear.

A foot pedal is another physical trigger, not a universally better input method. It can make sense when your hands are busy or when a repetitive hand motion is uncomfortable, but first confirm that your chosen application or operating-system setup can map it to the action you need.

Do not buy a pedal to solve an unclear workflow. Test a keyboard shortcut or existing button first; if the same trigger is still hard to reach or use consistently, then a dedicated control is a more justified experiment.

The final recommendation is to match the trigger to your posture and place.

Use a keyboard shortcut when you are already typing, push-to-talk when a deliberate hold fits your desk or device routine, and voice activation when hands-free context genuinely matters. No control style wins in every environment.

Relay Q is separate future push-to-talk hardware that ships in January 2027. It may be relevant later for people who want a hardware control, but it is not necessary to use Relay for macOS today.

Decide after a trigger audit, not a hardware wish list.

For a few days, note the first movement required before you can speak: reaching to the keyboard, finding a button, saying a wake phrase, or unlocking another device. The most reliable answer is often the trigger that removes one repeated movement without adding setup work elsewhere.

Treat a physical control as an experiment only after the software action is clear. Relay for macOS already works through its assigned recording key; Relay Q is separate future hardware and should not be used to imply a current capability or purchase requirement.
