AI glasses vs a phone vs a dedicated AI device: which is actually useful?

Use the phone you already have for most captured thoughts. AI glasses make more sense when the task depends on what you can see while moving; a dedicated device only earns its place when physical activation is the real problem.

Choose a phone when a quick captured thought is enough.

For most ideas, a phone already gives you a microphone, a familiar app, and somewhere to review what you captured. That is usually the right answer when the main job is to record a reminder, send a message, or start a conversation with an AI assistant.

The downside is interaction friction: you need to take the phone out, unlock it, choose the destination, and then put it away again. If that small sequence is not stopping you from recording thoughts, new hardware is unlikely to solve a meaningful problem.

Choose AI glasses when the thing you need to capture is in front of you.

AI glasses are most interesting when visual context matters while your hands are occupied. Meta describes its glasses as supporting voice-first questions, hands-free messaging, reminders tied to what you see, and visual assistance. Those are different jobs from writing a careful note at a desk.

That makes glasses a situational tool, not automatically a better computer-input device. Check feature availability in your country and on your model before choosing them around a specific workflow; AI features and languages can vary by product and region.

Choose a dedicated device only when activation is the bottleneck.

A dedicated device earns its place when it makes starting and finishing an interaction more reliable than reaching for a phone or finding the right keyboard shortcut. A physical control can be useful at a desk, while walking, or when a phone stays in a bag, but only if you will use that control often enough to justify another object to charge and carry.

Do not buy one just because it is called AI hardware. First write down the exact moment you currently lose an idea: opening an app, finding the microphone, speaking near other people, moving the result into your computer, or reviewing it later. The device should remove that particular step.

Relay Q is a future hardware option, not a current recommendation.

Relay for macOS is the current Relay product: standalone software for M-series Macs that does not require any Relay hardware. It should be evaluated as software, on its own workflow and privacy terms.

Relay Q is separate modular push-to-talk hardware scheduled to ship in January 2027. It is designed for handheld and wearable clip-on use, but it is not the basis for a buying recommendation today. Do not confuse a future hardware roadmap with what the macOS software can do now.

The final choice is about where you think, not which device looks newest.

Choose a phone for general capture, glasses for hands-free tasks that benefit from visual context, and dedicated hardware for repeated activation friction. Keep using a keyboard when precise editing is the job. These tools are complementary; none needs to replace every other input method.

This is a workflow comparison, not a battery-life, accuracy, or price benchmark. Those details change often and should be checked in the current documentation before you spend money.

Use one missed-thought log before you add another device.

For a week, note each time an idea disappears before you capture it. Record the context, the device you had with you, and the exact step that stopped you. A phone buried in a bag, a noisy room, an awkward unlock step, and a lack of visual context are different problems.

Then choose the smallest change that removes the repeating step. This keeps a hardware decision grounded in the work you already do, rather than a promise that one new device will replace your phone, keyboard, and computer.
